What GPS driven app would be exciting to have for the iPhone ?
We have partnered up with partfoundry.com the first real manufacture of GPS devices for the iPhone/ipod touch.
What that means to you is if you own one of these devices all software for GPS we create will be compatible.
We will be receiving our Dev units this week and will begin testing applications on both the iPhone, and ipod touch. Please voice your opinions on what kind of GPS applications sound interesting, and please be realistic in your ideas...an iPhone that uses GPS to teleport you to another country or something else far fetched will be ignored. Also try thinking outside the box, like "Buddy Beason" and things along those lines..
No idea is a bad idea, some just are not possible ;) Since this isn't a yes/no answer, you can leave comments with your ideas. If one sound interesting i might start work on something very soon!
Also visit Partfoundry.com if you wish to preorder a GPS unit. http://partfoundry.com/iphonegps.html
Prototype in action.
Some pictures of the icon and development to tie the "locoGPS" device into the operating system, to allow seamless integration and functionality. This will allow other developers to deploy 3rd party software that will communicate with "locoGPS" with a standardized language, taking the burden of opening port and initializing the device off each individual application.

Maps.app hack to add in gps controls

Hi, I have been using the
Hi,
I have been using the TomTom software before, i think it would be great if the iphone would have similar function...
This would make the iphone complete i think :-)

Turn-by-turn driving directions!
Hi everybody, You should
Hi everybody,
You should look the application of this guy for GPS/Pocketphone.
http://aeguerre.free.fr/
You can scan and use any map/support after calibration!!!
This is very useful for aviation but also for road or sea, some of my friends Pilots use it and it is working very well.
I contacted the guy to see if he would be interested to do it for iphone, as he did for pocketphone; he replied that it was not planned until now...
Please could you check if this kind of application could be workable on iphone?
Again many thanks for all your work!!! ;-)
Iphonelly yours

some kind of treasure hunt
some kind of treasure hunt game using the gps would be nice.
When is comes to GPS, one of
When is comes to GPS, one of the main/ most useful aspects is the ability to give real time drving directions. I see people requesting some rediculously complex programming from you haha but I'm more of a realistic person...
So from what I understand, the LocoGPS device updates coordinates as the user refreshes the application, but is it possible to have the application sort of automatically refresh itself maybe in increments of 2 seconds or something? ...basically a driving mode. Maybe have an arrow replace the drop pin or something representing the users direction? Google maps has that Map Quest style turn by turn directions already there so basically the GPS hack could just automatically update the directions based on the users location...I'm not even sure thats possible and kind of seems far fetched but just a tought.
Im really glad youve decided to impliment the app directly into google maps instead of creating a new application on the springboard. by the way I wasn't sure if this driving mode idea was the whole point of your application to begin with so sorry if this is useless input haha but I dont think a Tom Tom type of app for this is necessary just something that gets the job done....Thanks for being enthusiastic about improving the iphone!
the gps unit actually
the gps unit actually gets updated data every second. its up to the application to use it that often.
How about a little app that
How about a little app that figures out the sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset, phase of the moon, and all that kind of stuff for today and any other date. It would be really handy for photographer types who want to know when the light is best. Combine that with a tracklog and you got something every landscape photographer would love.
A more difficult task would be to figure out the timezone for any particular location on earth and display a clock for that location (including the "current" location). It could even look something like http://www.yeswatch.com/wrist-watch/timekeeper/tech_specs.html
I'd like to see an app that
I'd like to see an app that lets you send your location to a preset group of emails, basically a way to tell your friends "I am here" or just shoot a location back to your own email. Multiple groups of emails would be nice. Canned messages would be nice. Could be good for hikers, I fell and broke my leg here.
It would also be nice to see you buddies on a map with you.
I think something of the
I think something of the likes of MacGPS pro would be great.
Also some basic aviation screens would be great.
Very much looking forward to
Very much looking forward to purchasing your video and GPS applications.
Do you know yet if your products will integrate with Apple's coming SDK or continue to require jail break? (I don't mind jail break, but am curious to see how nice Apple will play with their SDK.)
Now for my wish list:
For the GPS application, I too would like to see it able to function with at least a subset of maps without requiring Edge/wifi. Specifically, I would like for it to be able to function while in 'airplane safe' mode, even if only with a local subset of simple maps selected before going off-line.
Also along those lines, it would be nice if it worked with aviation type maps, such as FAA sectionals.
The photo tagging idea mentioned above also sounds really neat.
If you'll forgive me for going a bit off topic; I've got a couple requests that perhaps you can work on with your hardware module parteners:
A digital compass module would be nice. It would be even better if it could be integrated into the same module as the GPS antennae.
What would be really nice is an IR remote control transmitter module along with a universal remote control application. It would be nice if the universal remote app was open to third party expansion. I've read (and seen for myself) that the iphone's camera can sense the signal of IR remote transmitters. It would be a nice touch if this could be used for two-way IR communication, perhaps with some really clever universal remote software that could ping and auto-detect devices capable of IR control and automatically setting itself to work with those devices (various TV brands, etc.)
Another nice module would be a USB plug that accepts transfers from digital cameras, just like the camera connection plug available for the ipod. Even better would be just an application for the iPhone that works with the already available iPod plug.
Thank you so much and good luck with your efforts.
Wish 1: Customizable gps
Wish 1: Customizable gps data-logging (savable track files) that can be transfered to a computer as gpx or kml. (Supposedly, the iPhone will soon be useable for storage like other iPods - rumors!)
Wish 2: Geotag images from the iPhone camera.
- Wish 2b: Combined wishes 1&2 to email photos in kmz for viewing on Google Earth.
Wish 3: Basic gps functions (Display heading, speed, waypoints, course ....; Breadcrumb trails; customizable display layouts).
Wish 4: Live tracking on NOAA RNCs &ENC's!
Wish 5: Bluetooth link to GPS receivers.
Good luck! Can't wait to see what you produce.
Reading other comments, I
Reading other comments, I saw a geotagging comment, great idea for iPhone, however i have a touch. How about camera/gps add on that does both! Add digital camera ablity to the touch and geotag at the same time. Tall order, and niche market I know. Wish my company would go AT&T so I could quit packing the Blackberry, Cannon,iPod touch, and GPSr and switch to iPhone w/GPS.
Hey but some problem im
Hey but some problem
im going to buy locogps but
tell me if u are going to discover an application
for DONT USE WIFI OR EDGE for get maps
i think need to make an aplicaction and load maps from a file and
dont use gps
See
See http://www.trackstick.com/ and develop a like app that records geo-data, then allows it to be dropped into google earth for the results as KML file.
2nd on a Geocaching app, and
2nd on a Geocaching app, and the ablity to go offline and retain regions on the map, roads only is plenty. Even better is the ablity to use KML files from google earth or other KML creation tools to map waypoints. Client Server scenero would be ideal, where using a embed FTP one could plan a trip on a PC/MAC and then FTP the maps/routes/waypoints (or geocaches) to the iPhone/iPod for use Off-Line. I would pay extra for a Micro SD to expand storage capacity.
skwad, Check out
skwad,
Check out http://www.freshlogicstudios.com/Products/Atlas/Gps.aspx They have a setup where you can send http GET requests to their server and track any number of gps devices. We will probably try to tailor an app towards their service just because its so darn easy to do.

Drunknbass,
I donated to the cause and will again when the GPS app is available. Already ordered the GPS Unit. Cant wait for the video app to be operational!!
Thanks
What would be cool too,
What would be cool too, would be the possibility to upload the gps coordinates to any server, so that we could track the iPhone, an option could set the time between different coordinates uploads, depending on your edge plan.
I'd also like to see apps
I'd also like to see apps that are viewable in landscape.
Maybe to save space you can
Maybe to save space you can pick and chose what area(s) you would like to download. This way if you live in NJ or NY you can only download those. On the other hand if someone wants to download everything they can.
So, the entire google earth
So, the entire google earth database (imagery) is in the 10-1000 TB range. I know that is a large range, but the whole range is outside of the capacity of the iPhones 8GB.
A much more feasible alternative would be the type of thing the Garmin Nuvi uses, just roads. This would take up a more reasonable amount of space (< 4GB) for a region, with a region being the size of US or Europe.
Another potential alternative would be to add MicroSD support to the locoGPS, and have it create another higher speed connection with the iPhone to serve up imagery/maps. This would require expanding the serial connection to a USB speed or creating a local wifi server.
I'll reiterate what a few
I'll reiterate what a few people have already said as I feel this is very important for iPod Touch users, but I'd prefer an app that does not require WiFi or EDGE for its main operation.
It's probably not possible but I'd really like to see Google's maps and routing capability brought offline and used with the GPS module.
if you had some massive
if you had some massive upload server
it would be cool if you integrated your innovative video app, with your gps so that if you are looking for a certian area and want a real iphone view of it
you could have it
I hope you cool devs can
I hope you cool devs can copy the whole google maps or most common countries in oogle maps and place it in another app so that we don't have to use EDGE or WIFI. :)
The problem with google maps
The problem with google maps is that it does not show route information in all countries.
So if u could have an option to save the current route information and download route information for the web,it would be great.
If people start releasing 'route packs',it would work awesome..
This is not going to set the
This is not going to set the world on fire but
it would be cool for my running to use GPS functionality to acurately track distance and time, particularly in the twisty country roads of the U.K. Also if the coordinates of the run could be mapped onto a map and stored for future use then I think this would have great appeal.
just a thought ;-)
1)Ability to store the maps
1)Ability to store the maps locally on the iphone and find the location without edge/wifi.
2)Real fast locating and easy on the iphone's battery life. :)
Thats it...i'll buy it !!
Hey, thought I would mention
Hey, thought I would mention that the accelerometers could be used as inertial guidance through areas of no GPS coverage (indoors, heavy foliage, etc).
GPS acquisition time is also dependent on how far the device has traveled from it's last GPS fix. It needs to know what satellites it saw last. If this is truly a bi-directional full duplex serial connection, the coordinates could be updated during periods of non-coverage with the accelerometer. This would be useful for indoors coverage and re-acquisition of satellites.
A input field for current coordinates would also be useful (for instance if you had just traveled hundreds of miles).
First, great video recording
First, great video recording app!! Perhaps an app for gps that looks for serial port gps coordinates in addition to a Bluetooth gps module? Also the app would be cool if it had a geotagging feature, this opens up features such as marking where a wireless network is, or like the basic programs for the android system that shows where your friends and family are, play games with gps(pacman), all these underlying features should be available for the app to rule over, even if people don't use them they have the ability to. Also perhaps a feature that saves a google earth XML file to open your route on the computer later. Basic things like a setting that changes the refresh rate, and constantly sends long/lat to google maps so your location will change while in google maps. This is great to see this progress, by the time apple really opens the iPhone coding, these apps are going to be wanted by apple!! Congrats on the good work!!
I can't wait to use GPS on
I can't wait to use GPS on my iphone. I thought Navizon was the solution to GPS on the iphone?? I understand the need for the extra hardware. Edge is awful! Yet when I play with a ipod touch I miss it. However I wish there where a software solution. With my luck soon as I purchase the hardware, an app will be out......
